We touched down a little late but started off smoothly with Robbie Rivera’s Juicybeach Party (“You have been to a Jewish Beach party?” “Erm, no, it was Juicy Beach!” ) at Nikki Beach, Miami. The venue was beautiful, plus I’ve never seen so many good looking people at once in my whole life. Note: Good looking ≠ beautiful. Had the impression to see the cumulated plastic surgery of the US in one club… The sound system was crap and it was a shame that the dancefloor was basically a VIP area. Come on guys, what’s that? However, Robbie’s set went great and it was a wow!-experience partying while the sun goes down in such an atmosphere. Left quite early due to jetlag and missed some guys I was hoping to see (Riva Starr, Thomas Gold, Stonebridge, Inpetto).

Friday was Ultra Music Festival (sold out!) Day 1 for us and we hit the Bicentennial Park around 5pm. Just in time to watch Little Boots from the VIP village and Passion Pit from the tent. Great performances! Headed to the Ibiza tent (which became the Brasil tent on Day 2) to watch Laidback Luke. I personally didn’t like the set too much as it was a Luke-like beat with just some highlights but the crowd appreciated it. The heat was on during that performance! Comparable to Will.I.Am who was next and didn’t reinvent DJing but made a good show with various styles of music. People loved that. Eric Prydz opened somewhat weak, was expecting more. Thus we left to see some of the live performance by Groove Armada. They did a pretty good job at the main stage, good show & performance. I missed Alex Metric, Fake Blood and Adam Freeland who I was hoping to catch but it was just too much. Afrojack for some reason played before David Guetta’s set at 9pm (probably some lineup screw) and was surprisingly good. I know him from some remixes he did but never saw him live, was a great set. French super-mega-hyper-star-DJ David Guetta cut Afrojack off (well I guess it was the Ultra crew, boo!) at 9 sharp. Regarding David, I don’t know him in person and think he does great tracks & collaborations that really work well everywhere. However some people in the industry are not too positive about him, I guess it’s always tricky when it comes to superstar status. Performance was OK just not great. Highlight of Day 1 for me was Dirty South at the Ibiza tent at 10pm. That was simply tearing down the tent, great set, great party, great tracks, great tension, wow! Thanks for that!

Day 2 of UMF started less jetlagged and early at 2pm. I was hoping to catch the DJ set by Calvin Harris but we arrived too late. So we saw Damian Marley & Nas from the VIP tent and at the main stage who did a great performance in the sizzling sun. I’m not really into that kind of music but clearly felt the vibe. Hey Christoph, we should do a joint show Jamaican Flavours meet soundwerk one day Groove Armada DJ set was to follow and also A+! But then and surprisingly Benny Benassi did a cutting edge electro set which was just stunning. Never seen him live before but the DJ sets are a must-hear! Faithless sound system came next at the main stage but we left for the Carl Cox & friends arena to catch some of the smooth flowing vibes by Erik Morillo. Good pleasure! Saw a bit of Hardwell’s and Sidney Samson’s performance in between at the Heineken dome and both were super, though somewhat Laidback Luke styled Markus Schulz did a very enjoyable performance at the Brasil tent and really celebrated with the crowd. Just like at Soundtropolis Markus simply delivers. We’ll try to persuade our friends at Armada Music to speed up the interview request with him which we’ll have on soundwerk airwaves soon! Back at the main stage (talking directly at the main stage!) we saw Armin van Buuren who showed that he is #1 DJ for a reason. Super set, great setting. Swedish House Mafia was next (oh-oh, superstar alarm!) and created massive destruction. I don’t know the guys in person either and like their productions a lot. Tiesto was quoted saying they are the “rockstars of the scene” and is probably right. Without further judgement I’d say their success is proof. Superstars ahead! (sigh) Went to Biscanye stage to see Major Lazor (yep!) and I was surprised by their great performance. They are literally working with the crowd and truly entertaining! Missed some guys I was hoping to see on Day 2 as well like Boys Noize, Crookers, A-Trak, Steve Aoki, Above&Beyond, Paul Oakenfold, Deadmau5 but such is life.

On a sidenote the Ultra Music Festival site was just awesome, well organized, the scenery with the buildings (they were illuminating the buildings with lasers later on), sun setting, thousands of people and the great main stage access + VIP village made this a very memorable event to us.

Although we thought of seeing Axwell vs. Bob Sinclar on Sunday we chose the Beatport Beach party which was a) free and b) a blast. Although drinks were (also regarding the free admission character) ridiciously priced people were far less high-heeled and far more down to earth. Lineup included Riva Starr, Afrojack, Kaskade, Wolfgang Gartner, Peter Kruder, AN21 & Sebastian Ingrosso & Steve Angello. It took place at the Gansevoort hotel’s beach and was the best closing party you could attend. All DJs did a great job, I especially enjoyed Wolfgang Gartner for the first time live and liked the beach-fit of Kaskade’s set. Dancing, chilling in the sand and finally tearing down the luckily-non-existant roof with the (now I reconcile ) stunning performance by Angello & Ingrosso was just unbelievable.

WMC 2010 is over at last but we won’t stop and will bring you more guests, interviews and hot-picks throughout the next soundwerk airwaves shows! Expect some big announcement upon return in April! For now we’d like to thank all the friendly people we met, the guys at ULTRA, Beatport, The Opium Group and everyone who worked hard to make this year’s WMC a lifetime experience!

In Summe lässt sich der bisherige, positive Eindruck der Gruppe nur unterstreichen. Extrem stimmungsgeladen und völlig ohne Stargetue haben die Young Punx (Laura Kidd und Tiffany Gore waren auch dabei) ein extrem rockiges Liveset und ein sehr kultverdächtiges DJ Set hingelegt. Man merkt, dass sie absoluten Spass an dem haben, was sie machen. Nach dem eigentlichen Gig wurde dann noch stundenlang mitten in und mit der Meute weitergefeiert.
Sehr ausgelassen, sehr sympathisch, alle Daumen hoch.

Wer noch mehr braucht, hat übrigens eine Woche später, am 24. Oktober Gelegenheit dazu. Dru spielt im Rahmen der Charityveranstaltung “Murmansk Mardi Gras” in der “Villa”, Landsberger Allee 54 in Berlin!

Man sieht sich!

(Samstag, 07.06.2008 von 10:00 – 17:00 Uhr, Elevator Gelände, Schuckertstr. 28, 48153 Münster)

Mit gemischten Gefühlen haben wir die Zeit bis Axwell totgeschlagen – wurden dann aber wirklich mehr als entschädigt. Wenn man von den zeitweise die Tanzfläche mit dicken Champagner Eiskübeln überquerenden, zu den Tischen eilenden Kellnerinnen absieht und auch den Kollegen an der Bar, der jedes Glas Champagner auf Ex trank übersieht, bleibt die Essenz des Abends: Sehr sehr gute Musik in einer sehr ansprechenden Location hoch über den Dächern Berlins. Axwell hat, erwartungsgemäß, ähnlich exzellent gerockt wie Armand van Helden auf dem Samsung Event und eine enorme Stimmung rübergebracht, die sich dann auch in den anfänglich sehr steifen Leuten verloren hat – jeder hat getanzt und das zu recht. Spannungsmäßig mit Dauer Vollgas ging es ca. 3 Stunden lang rund, bevor der Headliner und auch wir das Puro wieder verlassen haben.

Die Location ist eine umgebaute bzw. umdekorierte Halle am Hafen, aufgeteilt auf eine Party- und eine Dinner Area. In letzterer finden wohl auch Weindegustationen und Kochevents statt. Dominierende Farbe weiss, große Diskokugel über der Tanzfläche und zwei Bars runden die trotzdem ein bisschen “Geheimtipp”-mäßig-wirkende Location ab. Resumé fällt auch ganz positiv aus: Der Sound kam sauber rüber, die Leute schick und angenehm (bei weitem nicht so auf Wolke 8 wie im Spindler&Klatt). Musikalisch gab es zwar einige Bauchtritte aber im Gegenzug auch interessante Editionen bekannter Werke, in den meisten Fällen sauber gemixt. Der Eintritt war/ist frei, die Getränkepreise ganz moderat. Die Tür soll wohl ein bisschen härter sein, was ich natürlich nicht bewerten kann.

Vier von fünf Sternchen und ein schöner Auftakt im sonst eher beschaulichen Münster.

Dieses Wochenende wurde das offizielle Creamfields Lineup (August 2008) bekannt gegeben.
